CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The “nice guy” reputation of former University of North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith was confirmed Thursday.

Apparently, Smith, who died last month, made a point in his will to give $200 to each of his former players. Dante Calabria, one of those players, tweeted a picture Thursday of a letter and check he received.

In the letter, Smith requested the recipients of the $200 gifts to “enjoy a dinner out compliments of Coach Dean Smith.”

Smith, who was born in Emporia and played at Kansas, coached the Tar Heels from 1961-1997, so that’s a lot of former players, the Kansas City Star reported.
