SAN DIEGO – Four teenagers were in jail and another in the hospital Tuesday morning after stealing a car and leading police on a chase in the Midway district, police said.

Officers tried to stop the white Honda Civic for several traffic violations around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday. The driver took off and led police on  a chase before coming to a stop on Sports Arena Boulevard near Rosecrans Street.

Five people jumped out of the car and scattered. One person was caught hiding in the bed of a pickup truck, another under a car. Police then found a third person near the loading bay to Swiss Dairy at 2790 Kurtz Street. When police tried to arrest the teenager, he suddenly started convulsing and stopped breathing.

He was taken to the hospital and reportedly remained unconscious while being loaded into an ambulance. Police believe he may have tried to conceal drugs by swallowing them.

In total, four teenagers were arrested for the car theft in addition to the man taken to the hospital.
