SPRING VALLEY, Calif. -- A 32-year-old man was stabbed and seriously wounded while eating outside a Spring Valley taco shop early Monday, setting off a brawl between his many dining companions and two other men, authorities said.

The melee at Saritas Taco Shop at 9906 Campo Road was reported at 3:11 a.m., according to San Diego County sheriff's  Sgt. David Toner.

The victim was dining with 10 to 15 other men outside the restaurant when a man approached and stabbed the victim, Toner said. The assailant was accompanied by a second man.

Before deputies arrived, the suspect and his companion left, possibly in a silver or gray coupe driven by a woman, Toner said.

While investigating, deputies heard two to three gunshots in the area, but no gunshot victims were found at the scene.

The man who was stabbed was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition following emergency surgery, Toner said.
