LOS ANGELES – A man was shot and killed during a confrontation with Los Angeles police Sunday, authorities said.
Officers were dispatched to East Sixth and South San Pedro streets around 11:35 a.m. Sunday after a report of two people fighting, according to LAPD spokesman Officer Jack Richter. When they arrived, the altercation continued.
LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery told KTLA, an officer used his Taser on one of the men. The man was then shot by police and died at the scene.
Yolanda Young witnessed the fatal shooting and told KTLA the man “had three Tasers on him” during the confrontation.
“He was down but then he jumped up, like he was juiced up, and then he started swinging at the police and they were fighting him back. … They shot him five times,” Young said.
Another witness, Tonya Edwards, said she knew the homeless man who was shot and that he had “a lot of mental issues.”
Dozens of LAPD personnel remained at the crime scene hours after the shooting.
“It’s going to be a long investigation and we will get to the bottom of it,” Montgomery said.
