SAN DIEGO -- A second-grader struck by a car on an El Cajon street in view of his mother and sister died at a hospital early today, about nine hours after the accident.

Angel Cruz, who turned 7 on New Year's Eve, ran into traffic lanes in the 900 block of Peach Avenue in the path of a Hyundai sedan about 3:45 p.m. Thursday, according to police and the county Medical Examiner's Office.

His mother was waiting in her parked car on the other side of the street when the westbound vehicle hit her son, who attended nearby Naranca Elementary School.

Medics took Angel to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, where he died shortly after 12:30 a.m.

The driver of the Hyundai, an 18-year-old man, immediately stopped and cooperated with investigators, police said. Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the crash.

The motorist was not expected to be cited, Lt. Rob Ransweiler said.

In a brief news conference late this morning, Cajon Valley School District Superintendent David Miyashiro asked news crews to give Angel's family and classmates privacy during their time of grief.

"The environment that our kids are in right now needs to be as normal as possible," Miyashiro said.

Outrageous! Could have been prevented. A 7 year old should not be crossing the street alone. So sad, the loss of a child is unbearable.

I live on this street near this scene and wasn’t surprised when I saw this on my way home from work…there are always children everywhere on this street and way too many drivers speeding through. About 6 months ago my dog had gotten loose and was involved in a hit-and-run when she was struck by a silver car clearly going over the speed limit. This is such sad news and my heart goes out to the family. Hopefully speed bumps will be added because I’ve witnessed too many speeders and other children and dogs close to running into the street..

Im sure this mother is already thinking to herself all of the “if only I….” this isn’t a time to attack her. Simply learn from it, keep your own kids safe. Teach them road safety. My heart breaks not only for the family of the boy, but also for the driver. Even though he wasn’t at fault what a traumatic event to be involved in.
