SAN DIEGO – Police were looking for a 22-year-old man who carjacked a Rancho Bernardo man in his driveway and then ditched the car in the South Bay early Thursday morning, authorities said.

A 39-year-old man was unloading groceries in front of his home on the 17000 block of Aguamiel Road just before 7 p.m. Wednesday when the younger man pulled up in his own car. The man and the homeowner,  who knew each other, got into a brief argument. The thief then hopped into the homeowner’s SUV and drove off, leaving his own car at the scene of the crime.

A San Diego police officer spotted the stolen SUV a few minutes later and tried to follow, but the thief ran several red lights and got away.

The stolen SUV was later found abandoned on southbound Interstate 15 near the junction with Interstate 5. San Diego police were still looking for the carjacker Thursday.
