UPDATE: Boy’s body found in freezer on Indian reservation

BARONA, Calif. -- A woman was arrested after her 32-year-old boyfriend was fatally shot and a child's body was found hidden in a freezer at a home on the Barona Indian Reservation in Lakeside Friday, authorities reported.

It started when the woman, identified as Elaina Rose Welch, 32, called police from Quincy Canyon Road around noon Friday and said her son was dead.

Moments later, officials received a call from the same house about an attempted suicide.

When Tribal Enforcement got to the scene, they found the woman's boyfriend standing outside. He walked back into the house. Minutes later, witnesses reported hearing gunfire. The woman came outside of the home with a shotgun, walked down the roadway, dropped the gun, and hid in the bushes, according to sheriff's spokeswoman Melissa Aquino. A helicopter tracked her down and she was detained following a SWAT standoff.

Authorities went into the home and found the boyfriend shot dead in the chest.

After searching the house, detectives located the body of a deceased young child in the freezer under some frozen food items.

Welch was arrested on suspicion of two counts of murder.

Authorities closed a nearby stretch of San Vicente Road and briefly locked down Barona Charter School while investigating the shooting, the spokeswoman said.
