SAN DIEGO -- A 22-year-old man suspected of murdering his mother and father inside their Sunset Cliffs-area home was behind bars Saturday on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Peter David Haynes was armed with a handgun when he was arrested several hours after gunfire rang out in the 1000 block of Tarento Drive, near Santa Barbara Street, according to San Diego police homicide Lt. Paul Rorrison.

He was being held without bail in connection with the deaths of David Ellis Haynes, 61, and Lissa Danielle Haynes, 62.

David Haynes called 911 about 3:10 a.m. Friday. Rorrison said the police dispatcher heard gunshots as he asked for help shortly before the phone disconnected.

Officers sent to the home found David and Lissa Haynes mortally wounded. Both were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, but later died, according to the lieutenant.

Rorrison asked anyone with additional information on the family to call police at 619-531-2425, or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
