USD football wins championship in thrilling fashion

SAN DIEGO – The University of San Diego football team won a thrilling game 32-27 over Valparaiso with a hail Mary pass to the end zone has time expired Saturday, clinching the Pioneer Football League championship.

Toreros quarterback Keith Williams threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Brandon White, who grabbed it out of the air to put the final six points on the scoreboard at Torero Stadium.

The win improved the Toreros record to 7-1 in the PFL, 9-1 overall.  The team won their third PFL championship in four years, earning an automatic bid into the FCS playoffs.

Valpo fell to 1-6 in the PFL, 3-8 overall.

The game appeared to have been over after Valpo scored a touchdown with 28 seconds left. USD started with the ball on their 34-yard line and completed a 22 yard pass to Reggie Bell moving the chains to Valpo’s 44-yard line.  On the last chance pass with four seconds remaining, Williams tossed the ball to White.

The Toreros close their regular season against Cal Poly Saturday at 4 p.m. at Torero Stadium.
