NATIONAL CITY, Calif. -- A shooting outside a popular South Bay taco shop left a man in critical condition, authorities said.

National City police received several 911 calls at about 10:45 p.m. Thursday reporting shots fired outside Tacos El Gordo on Highland Avenue near 19th Street.

When officers arrived, they found a wounded man in his 30s in the parking lot. He had been shot twice -- once in the neck and once in the abdomen. The victim was taken to UCSD Medical Center. He was in critical condition after undergoing surgery, police said.

Witnesses said the gunman ran off after the shooting, but no one was able to give police a detailed description of the man.

Police said the taco shop is popular and they hope that a witness will come forward with information that helps them identify the gunman.
