KEY LARGO, Fla. – A group of crafty scuba divers competed in an underwater pumpkin carving contest.

The teams of two descended 30-feet under the surface of the water in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and got into the Halloween spirit.

The divers created their work of art, while keeping their tools from floating off.

“What’s challenging about carving a pumpkin underwater is not only about the buoyancy of your body, but the buoyancy of the pumpkin itself,” said participant Wayne Cline. “You’ve got to find a way to maneuver it and hold it in place while making intricate lines and intricate cuts.”

The winners earned bragging rights and a dive trip.
