SAN DIEGO — Construction began Wednesday on Pendry San Diego, a 317- room hotel project in the Gaslamp Quarter.

The hotel is going up on a site bordered by Fifth and Sixth avenues, and J Street. The design includes a rooftop pool, two restaurants, a lounge, beer hall, spa, fitness room and 22,000 square feet of meeting space.

“Pendry San Diego will transform what is one of the most valuable remaining parcels of undeveloped property in the Gaslamp Quarter into an exciting and vibrant hotel, restaurant and nightlife destination,” said the developer, Robert Green.

“A development of this caliber, which will provide so many important jobs and economic benefits to the community, has not been undertaken in downtown San Diego for many years,” he said.

Green previously built the Park Hyatt Resort Aviara, formerly known as the Four Seasons Resort Aviara, in Carlsbad.

Pendry San Diego is set to be managed by Montage Hotels & Resorts when it opens in about two years. Montage currently operates hotel in Laguna Beach, Beverly Hills and Kapalua Bay, Hawaii — among other places.
