San-Ysidro-Teachers-Almost-On-Strike

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. – Teachers in the San Ysidro School District will go on strike Wednesday morning after contract talks fell through.

Since the agreement wasn’t reached, teachers said they will walk off the job and start picketing at 7 a.m.

The talks were over cuts to salaries, reductions in preparation time, overcrowded student learning sessions and typing evaluations to test scores.

San Ysidro Education Association members approved a strike earlier this year. Since then, the union and district had been in contract negotiations with a mediator.

The executive board for the teacher’s union voted September 24 to strike if a settlement wasn’t reached by Wednesday.

Interim Superintendent George Cameron told Fox5 in August that the district is in a financial crisis and was prepared to deal with a walkout if needed.

“We hope that the teachers don’t strike. I don’t think it benefits anybody in the community,” said Cameron in an interview in August. “We have fully qualified substitutes ready to step in for us. It’s going to be business as usual in terms of our responsibility to continue to educate our students.”
