SAN DIEGO — A 19-year-old man and his live-in girlfriend were behind bars Friday on suspicion of carrying out a series of East County home burglaries and a Little Italy street holdup during which two women were wounded by gunfire.

Richard Fox and Deanna Rodriguez, 28, were arrested at their home in the 4500 block of F Street in San Diego on Thursday morning.

During a search of the residence, police officers and deputies allegedly found property stolen during four home burglaries in Spring Valley, sheriff’s Sgt. Greg Hampton said.

Investigators believe the couple also tried to rob three woman on a sidewalk in the 700 block of West Date Street in San Diego on the evening of July 27. During the crime, Rodriguez allegedly pulled a pistol and demanded the pedestrians’ purses, opened fire before they had a chance to respond and then fled in a minivan driven by Fox, according to authorities.

Two of the victims suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds — one to an arm and the other to the abdomen.

Fingerprint and DNA evidence allegedly links the couple to the burglaries. It was unclear how they were identified as suspects in the failed robbery and shooting.

Fox and Rodriguez were booked into county jail on suspicion of assault, burglary, conspiracy, attempted robbery and possessing stolen property. They were being held on bail of $145,000 and $200,000, respectively, pending arraignment, scheduled for Monday afternoon.
