SAN DIEGO -- People who lost loved ones in the crash of PSA Flight 182 or witnessed the disaster 36 years ago are scheduled to gather Thursday morning where the Boeing 727 came down in North Park.

The aircraft was on final approach to Lindbergh Field on a clear morning on Sept. 25, 1978, when it collided with a small private plane and plowed into a residential neighborhood.

The 135 passengers and crew on the jet, two occupants of the Cessna aircraft and seven people on the ground died. Many of the victims on the flight from Sacramento, with a stop in Los Angeles, were PSA employees heading to the company's San Diego headquarters.

The collision prompted changes in air traffic control rules and led to the creation of improved aviation technology.

A group of relatives of victims of the crash is working to establish a memorial in North Park near the crash site.

According to a recent post on the PSA Flight 182 Memorial Facebook page, organizers have decided against placing the memorial at the triangle of Boundary, Dwight and Felton streets because of opposition from neighbors. The post says they're looking for other locations nearby.

oh my goodness I was 10 years old and I was on a tower on the playground watching the air planes go by fairly close to the airport when I witnessed a Cessna hit the PSA plane. I ran inside the class room to tell my teacher and still to this day I have nightmares about this insedent. Very tragic situation and will never forget it.

Fact, the PSA jet hit the Cessna not the Cessna hit the jet. There were looters at the crash site stealing jewelry etc. they should have been shot on sight
