SAN DIEGO — City Councilmember Marti Emerald announced Friday that she will undergo surgery to treat breast cancer.

Emerald said her doctors say she has an excellent prognosis for a full recovery.

The councilwoman who represents the city’s District 9 said she learned of the diagnosis this week while in Washington with the San Diego Chamber of Commerce.

“I look forward to a full recovery and getting back to work and back to the business of serving our city,” Emerald said in a post to her Facebook page. “I also look forward to the opportunity to serve those also struggling with breast cancer and will use this Facebook site to guide you to resources that may help you or loved ones in your journey for a cure.”
