AVALON, Calif — Big waves generated by Hurricane Marie left a wake of destruction at a boatyard on Santa Catalina Island and created havoc at Avalon Harbor, officials said.

The big surf battered a boatyard at Pebbly Beach on the east end of the island, the Los Angeles Times reported. Some boats were overturned and lumber was scattered across the beach.  Some of the wood apparently washed into Avalon Harbor.

“We’ve got large pieces of lumber floating around pilings,” Orne Carstarphen of the Avalon Harbor Patrol told the Times. “There’s a lot of hazards and number of moorings that have been damaged.”
