Chula Vista Apartments EvacuatedCHULA VISTA, Calif. — The residents of a Chula Vista apartment building evacuated after a hit-and-run driver struck a gas meter on the property were back in their homes Monday, police said.

The woman crashed into the meter in the parking lot area of the complex at 580 L Street shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sunday, ditched the wrecked car and ran away, according to a Chula Vista police statement.

Authorities evacuated one building’s residents until fire department personnel could shut off the gas, and it dissipated, according to the statement.

Police said the crash remained under investigation, and a description of the driver was not immediately available.
