SAN DIEGO – Police are searching for a driver who was involved in an argument with another man in Serra Mesa before running him over Saturday night.

San Diego police said a man confronted the driver about speeding on Hurlbut Street just after 9 p.m. He walked into the street to approach the driver’s open window, when the two got into an altercation.

“Some people came out of the house when they heard the collision, pulled the victim out of the street and moved him to the sidewalk,” said police Lt. Steven Shaw.

The 25-year-old victim suffered a lacerated liver and was unconscious as he was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to Shaw.

“The vehicle we’re looking for is a green SUV. There are some reports it was a green Ford F-150 – so one of those two vehicles,” said Shaw.

Witnesses said the victim, who is looking out for the safety of others, got into an argument a week earlier with the same driver about his speeding.

“It shouldn’t have gotten that far. He’s trying to stop someone from speeding down the street where kids are playing — that’s all it is,” said a man who knows the victim and wanted to remain anonymous.

No suspect description was provided and it remains unclear whether the driver actually intended to run over the victim.
