Driver killed in flaming crash in University City

SAN DIEGO – One person died in a flaming car crash in the University City area of San Diego, according to authorities.

The single-vehicle crash was at 7900 Genesee Avenue, just south of Nobel Drive. It was reported at 3:43 a.m., according to San Diego police Sgt. Dan Lasher.

According to Lasher, the driver had been traveling north, made an unsafe right turn, and the car struck an abutment. The vehicle burst into flames, the driver was trapped and he or she died in the burning car.

No other injuries were reported. There was no immediate description of the driver’s gender, and the name was not released.

The incident remains under investigation.
