ALPINE, Calif. — An alleged sexual assault in Alpine last week in which two men were initially sought is now believed to have taken place somewhere else, and sheriff’s officials said Friday they were focusing on one attacker.

The victim told deputies that she had pulled over to the side of South Grade Road near Cleghorn Way about 8 p.m. on July 7 when two suspects approached her in a pickup truck and assaulted her, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

She described one man as white and between 25 and 35 years old, about 5 feet 11 and 170 pounds with hazel eyes, a shaved head and no facial hair, wearing a white T-shirt, dark jeans and black high-top shoes. He had several tattoos including devil horns on his head, flames on his neck and a skull on his arm, the woman told investigators.

The victim said the second suspect was white and between 35 and 40, about 6 feet 1 and 200 pounds with slicked back brown hair, brown eyes and a patch of hair under his lower lip. He was wearing a black baseball cap backward, a black leather “biker kutte” vest over a white t-shirt, jeans and boots.

However, sheriff’s officials said the “victim’s recollection of the incident” had revealed that the assault did not take place in Alpine on the date she first told deputies.

Investigators were continuing to work to determine where the assault occurred and were focused on only one attacker, according to a sheriff’s department statement.

“While the case is still being actively investigated, the Alpine Sheriff’s Station is confident in advising the community that the incident previously described did not take place and there is no danger to the community as a result,” the statement said.

Sheriff’s officials said they would address the Alpine community’s concerns during a public forum at the sheriff’s station set for 11 a.m.
