SAN DIEGO — A man set himself on fire on a Midway-area roadside Friday, authorities reported.

Witnesses reported seeing the man ignite himself in the 3500 block of Sports Arena Boulevard about 12:15 p.m., according to San Diego police. A gasoline can was next to him, SDPD public-affairs Officer Mark Herring said.

By the time patrol officers arrived in the area about a minute later, the fire was out. It was unclear whether someone or something had doused the flames, or if they burned themselves out, Herring said.

Medics took the man to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. The extent of his injuries was unclear.

According to witnesses, the man appeared to have deliberately set himself ablaze, Herring said.
