Daniel Gonzalez was arraigned Thursday, accused of killing Josh Crook on June 17th, following a World Cup game between Mexico and Brazil.
National City Police said Gonzalez and another suspect, Salvador Chavez, were fighting a third man inside the Rincon Del Mar Restaurant on National City Boulevard. That brawl spilled outside onto the sidewalk.
Crook is said to have been shot after he intervened, trying to stop the fight. Family members said Crook was shot four times.
According to investigators, Gonzalez fled the country but was arrested earlier this week in Tijuana.
Through his defense attorney, Gonzalez pleaded not guilty to murder and two other charges. He faces 50 years to life in prison.
Gonzalez is being held under two million dollars bail and is due back in court August 5th.
