RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. — The driver of a dump truck lost his foot and suffered other serious injuries Wednesday when he jumped out as the truck careened out of control toward an embankment.
The 38-year-old trucker was heading south on Via Ambiente on the northern outskirts of Rancho Santa Fe about 9:15 a.m. when the work vehicle the brakes may have failed and it began rapidly picking up speed, according to the California Highway Patrol.
As he neared a “T” intersection at Calle Ambiente, the driver jumped out and the truck ran over his foot. It then sideswiped another vehicle before plunging over an embankment, CHP public affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said.
According to witnesses, the man’s right foot was torn off. Medics took him to Palomar Medical Center. He was expected to survive, Bettencourt said.
