SAN DIEGO — An 18-year-old man was badly injured when he fell up to 90 feet down a cliff in La Jolla, rescuers said.

La Jolla Cliff RescueThe man tumbled over the cliff at about 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

The young man was with a group of teenagers who were hanging out at the edge of a cliff on Coast Drive. No one in the group actually saw him fall, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief David Gerbroth.

“When the group turned around, they realized one of the members of the group, an 18-year-old male, was gone, and (they) looked over the cliff’s edge and their friend had fallen 75 to 90 feet down the side of the cliff,” Gerbroth said.

Rescuers used a helicopter to hoist the injured team up to the bluff. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of major head injuries. There was not information on his condition Wednesday morning.
