Boy Scout who died on Fiesta Island identified
SAN DIEGO — Authorities Tuesday released the name of a 12-year-old Nevada boy who died in an apparently self-inflicted shooting during a Boy Scout outing on Fiesta Island.
Officers responding to a report of an attempted suicide in the 1700 block of Fiesta Island Road shortly after 7:30 a.m. found William Shook of Las Vegas in a tent, mortally wounded by at least one gunshot wound to the chest, according to police and the county Medical Examiner’s Office. A handgun lay nearby, SDPD Lt. Mike Hastings said.
The pistol found next to the child was unregistered, according to police.
“It is believed the gun’s origin will be traced back to Las Vegas … and was brought to San Diego by (the victim),” the lieutenant said.
William had traveled to San Diego over the weekend along with his scout troop for a weeklong camping trip at Mission Bay.
