SAN DIEGO — School districts throughout the North County announced Thursday they would remain closed Friday because of the proximity of wildfires, poor air quality, heat and staffing difficulties.

The San Diego County Office of Education is providing guidance to support those efforts.

All campuses in the Bonsall Union, Cardiff, Carlsbad Unified, Del Mar Union, Encinitas Union, Escondido Union Elementary, Escondido Union High, Fallbrook Union Elementary and Fallbrook Union High districts will be closed on Friday.

Also shut down will be schools in the Oceanside Unified, Poway Unified, Ramona Unified, Rancho Santa Fe, San Dieguito Union High, San Marcos Unified, San Pasqual Union, Solana Beach, Vallecitos, Valley Center-Pauma Unified and Vista Unified districts.

Cathedral Catholic High School will also be closed Friday.

Also shut down will be San Pasqual Academy, Vista Discovery, Reflection School, Breaking Cycles School, Teen Outreach-North School, Fallbrook Academy, Escondido Community School, as will the North County Regional Education Center, North County Academy, all special education programs operated by the North Coastal Consortium for Special Education, HOPE Infant programs in the Northern Region, and Migrant Education programs in the Northern Region.

For colleges, Cal State San Marcos and Palomar College will remain closed because of a wildfire that raged in the hills above San Marcos. MiraCosta College’s three campuses are tentatively scheduled to be open.

School districts toward the central section of San Diego that ceased operations today are planning to be open Friday, including the Cajon Valley, Coronado Unified, Grossmont Union High, La Mesa-Spring Valley and Santee districts, among others.

For the San Diego Unified School District, all campuses will be open except those in Mira Mesa and Scripps Ranch, where the air quality is poor.

The closed San Diego Unified Schools Friday will be Scripps Ranch High School and Thurgood Marshall Middle School; Dingeman, E.B. Scripps, Jerabek and Miramar Ranch elementary schools in the Scripps Ranch neighborhood.

Mira Mesa High School and Twain Mesa High School, Challenger and Wangenheim middle schools will also be closed, along with Ericson, Hage, Hickman, Mason, Sandburg and Walker elementary schools and Walker Child Development Center.

The San Diego County Office of Education said each district in fire- impacted areas must inventory its sites for cleanliness and air quality to ensure they are safe for children and staff to occupy. The agency said it was providing guidance to support those efforts.

A large number of charter public schools have announced that they will be closed. The California Charter Schools Association has created a list of San Diego County charter school closures.

I think they should all close, there's no use to open back on the last day of the week. We gotta keep the kids away from the air quality and the heat. Let the teachers rest too!

Poway Unified School District is closed as well.

All schools and District Offices in the Poway Unified School District will be closed tomorrow, Friday, May 16th. Pending additional fire concerns, all schools and offices will re-open on Monday, May 19th.

Because of the continuing strain on water and power resources, and concerns about air quality, the majority of school districts in North County will also be closed. Each school district in the County will be making its own announcement.

All CIF practices and competitions, countywide, are cancelled for Friday. The decision regarding Saturday practices and competitions is still pending and our high schools will be notified tomorrow.

All after-school activities at all school sites are also cancelled on Friday. However, the out-of-county field trips scheduled for Friday and Saturday may still take place. You will receive additional information from your school site regarding these events.

Please continue to monitor our website, Facebook and Twitter accounts, and your email and phone for updates.

I want to thank students, families, staff members, and the community for your continued cooperation and I send my thoughts and prayers to anyone directly affected by these fires.

Thank you and please be safe.

    John Collins
    Superintendent
