IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. — Federal authorities are searching the shoreline and waters off of Imperial Beach after a water scooter was found floating about a mile and a half off the coast Friday morning.

Abandoned Personal WatercraftThe U.S. Coast Guard called lifeguards shortly after 6 a.m. to request help retrieving the personal watercraft, Imperial Beach Lifeguard Capt. Robert Stabenow told Fox 5 News. When lifeguards reached the watercraft, they found that no one was aboard or in the nearby waters. They discovered a life vest floating in the water and another vest on the beach, Stabenow said.

The watercraft was found about three miles north of the border with Mexico, so U.S. Border Patrols agents were notified and joined in search.

As of 8:30 a.m., no one was found in the water or onshore. Why the watercraft was floating offshore remained a mystery, authorities said.
