LAKESIDE, Calif. — A bloodied man found dead Thursday in an alley near Lindo Lake Park in Lakeside, died from an apparent suicide, deputies said.

A passer-by found the body behind a strip mall in the 12500 block of Lakeshore Drive shortly after 1:30 p.m., according to sheriff’s officials.

Lakeside Shooting2There was blood on the face and chest of the unidentified dead man, homicide Lt. Glenn Giannantonio told reporters.

“The witness who initially reported the (death) said there was a pistol on the man’s lap,” Giannantonio said. “While the witness was on the phone with the 911 dispatcher, another man walked up … and picked up the pistol. The man cleared the round from the chamber of the pistol and put the gun in his pocket before walking away.”

Administrators at El Capitan High School and Lindo Park and Christian Foothills elementary schools kept all students secured in their classrooms for a time while deputies searched the neighborhood. The personnel did not locate the man who had taken the gun but found the weapon under a bush near where the victim was found.

Late Thursday afternoon, the man turned up and told sheriff’s officials he took the firearm in fear a teenager would pick it up because of the group of teenagers that began surrounding the body. He also confessed to tossing the gun in the bushes nearby.

The victim has not yet been identified.
