Teen arrested in deadly hit-and-run

CARLSBAD, Calif. — A 17-year-old girl was in custody Thursday, accused of driving under the influence and fleeing the scene after she hit and fatally injuring a 20-year-old skateboarder in Carlsbad, police said.

Carlsbad Hit and RunThe fatal hit-and-run in the area of Palomar Airport Road and Carlsbad Boulevard was reported at 10:51 p.m. Wednesday, according to Carlsbad police Lt. Pete Pascual.

“The victim was located in the roadway along southbound Carlsbad Boulevard, just north of Island Way, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries after life-saving measures were attempted,” the lieutenant said in a statement.

Witnesses described seeing a silver Chrysler sedan speed off southbound after the accident. The vehicle described by witnesses was later found at 6550 Ponto Drive, said Pascual. Police arrested the teen driver on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony drunken driving and felony hit and run. She was taken to the juvenile detention center in Kearny Mesa for processing.

A family member identified the skateboarder as Vinnie Zellefrow, a Mira Costa College student and loved music and playing the guitar and drums.

A man who identified himself as victim’s brother said Zellefrow who lived near the accident scene and had been skating with friends. The friends saw collision and wrote down the license plate number of the car, the brother said. Police used the license number to track down the car, he said.
