SAN DIEGO — A 21-year-old man has been arrested as a suspect in an attempted rape last week in Balboa Park, police said Thursday.

BalboaParkRapeSuspectSDPD sex crimes detectives arrested Ameen Ali Bryant Wednesday at about 3 p.m., Lt. Chuck Kaye said.

Bryant is accused of attacking a woman who was walking on the Bridal Trail in Balboa Park just south of the Cabrillo Bridge shortly after 1 p.m. on Jan. 14, Kaye said. The attacker ran up, grabbed the victim from behind and forced her to the ground. The woman fought the man off and he fled when two people walked upon the scene.

The victim and witnesses were able to give investigators a detailed description of the attacker, and police released a composite sketch of the man last week.

Based on the description of the suspect and other evidence, several SDPD detectives who had previous dealing with Bryant suspected that he might be the perpetrator, Kaye said. Investigators collected a small amount of his DNA and the police lab compared it with DNA collected at the crime scene. The samples matched, Kaye said.

Bryant was booked into jail on a charge of assault with intent to commit rape.
