SAN DIEGO — A 16-inch cast iron water main broke early Sunday, and left some Southcrest residents without running water.

City public utilities crews were working to repair the pipe, which ruptured about 5:30 a.m. in the 1400 block of South 45th Street, Public Utilities Department spokesman Arian Collins said.

Water service was initially knocked out to customers in the 700 through 1400 blocks of South 45th Street, along with the 4400 blocks of both Mayberry and Z streets, Collins said.

As of about 11:45 a.m., water service had been restored to those on Mayberry and Z streets, Collins said.

Tanks on water wagons were providing those who remained without service with drinking water, he said.

Water service was restored for residents around 4:30 p.m.
