Overcharges, however, do occur. County inspections routinely find about 20 percent of businesses make overcharge errors, county officials said. ¬†¬†Agriculture, Weights and Measures department officials said consumers can protect themselves checking the receipt, then notifying the store’s management of any discrepancies; and using sales advertising to verify prices and knowing that retailers cannot legally charge more than their lowest advertised, posted or quoted price.

Shoppers should also watch for publicized sales, make a shopping list, comparison shop and use a spending plan and a timetable to take advantage of future sales, county officials said.

County officials said overcharges that cannot be resolved at the store level should be reported to the Agriculture, Weights and Measures by calling (888) 878-3722.
