SAN DIEGO — San Diegans are joining a national hunger strike to call attention to Congress’s inability to pass immigration reform.

“In my little part of the world, the one thing I could do is fast myself,” said Angel Godinez.

The Fast for Families campaign started with a small group in front of the White House. They have been fasting for more than 22 days. The protest is now spreading across the country, with families and church congregations joining the fast.

Godinez says it’s also about keeping the momentum in the fight for families torn apart by the nation’s immigration laws.

It’s an issue President Barack Obama has been urging Congress to take up, but House Speaker John Boehner (R) has said he will not support the Senate’s comprehensive immigration reform bill, so there seems little chance of government action anytime soon.

“Its very frustrating,” said Godinez, who is joined by other San Diegans fasting for the cause. They say they hope to increase awareness about the  issue.

“We all know people who have had experiences with families being broken up,” said Alisha Nichols.

Several members of Congress including California Rep.  Juan Vargas (D) are also joining the fast.

“I hope that this fast helps open the hearts and minds of my colleagues across the aisle,” said Vargas.

  • Sick of you!

My entire life I have thought things should go both way for an individual. So, if the illegals want a free ride here in the United States, my family and myself should get a free ride in mexico or any other place these parasites have come from.

On second thought no thanks, I wont give up my country without a fight! F U Q U illegals!!! GO HOME!!!

How about these illegal's home countries hand their land and natural resources over to America and we'll consider them a state and they can be citizens? Pretty simple solution.

Typical liberal BS: A couple sneaks into the country illegally, then has kids, then gets caught, then gets deported, and somehow it's OUR fault??? Are you freaking kidding me???

I and millions of potential immigrants that are waiting their turn to come to America from foreign lands are all for immigration reform, they ask that those who have entered illegally be sent home and get in line with those waiting to be called.

Write and call your congressmen and senators, demand those here illegally be sent home immediately so our family and friends that are waiting in foreign lands can be called to become American Citizens.
