CARLSBAD, Calif. — An 18-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing someone in the stomach outside the Westfield Plaza El Camino Mall in Carlsbad early Friday, but another suspect got away, police officials said.
The assault outside the entrance to the mall at 2525 El Camino Real was reported shortly after 12:30 a.m., police officials said.
After the assault, the suspected assailant, Javier Covarrubias, and an associate ran off, police said. Covarrubias was detained at the nearby Moviemax Theater, but the other suspect escaped, police said.
The victim was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery, police said. The extent of his injuries was unknown.
Covarrubias was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
The outstanding suspect was described as male, thin and about 5 feet 9. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.
