Residents jump from 2nd floor to escape fire

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Nine South Bay residents were displaced when their two-story home caught fire in Chula Vista early Friday, authorities said.

TChula Vista Duplex Firehe fire at 1471 Helix Way in Chula Vista was reported at 4:21 a.m., a fire dispatcher said.

Two people trapped on the top floor of the two-story duplex didn’t wait for rescuers. They jumped from a window to escape the flames.

“They were able to get out, and they made a quick decision, and in this case, it was the right decision,” a firefighter said. “They jumped out of the back, and they are not seriously hurt, so it worked out well for them.”

Crews extinguished the fire in about 20 minutes.

No one was seriously injured.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation, but one resident told Fox 5 News that a heater may have sparked the fire.
