DUI suspected in Chula Vista crash

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — A motorist was hospitalized Wednesday with major head injuries following a two-vehicle crash in Chula Vista believed to be the result of drunken driving, police said.

Chula Vista Police Department CVPDThe crash in the 400 block of East H Street occurred about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to Chula Vista police Capt. Gary Wedge.

A westbound Volkswagen Passat hit another vehicle, sending both vehicles into a center median, he said. The Passat also struck a tree and overturned.

The driver of the Passat was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital with major head injuries and a passenger in the Passat sustained minor injuries, Wedge said. No one in the other vehicle was injured.

“The cause of the collision has not been determined but alcohol appears to have been a factor,” Wedge said.

East H Street, east of Interstate 805, was closed for several hours for crash investigators. The roadway reopened to traffic around 8 a.m. Wednesday.
