Power Pole DownSAN DIEGO — A man died after he crashed his speeding car into a power pole in Logan Heights early Tuesday, knocking out power to thousands of San Diego Gas & Electric customers, authorities said.

The fatality in the 3300 block of Imperial Avenue was reported at 3:25 a.m., according to San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros.

The man was driving a Toyota Matrix at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and hit the pole, dying at the scene, Delimitros said.

“The impact caused live powerlines to drop onto and across the 15 freeway above,” he said.

About 4,700 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in the area were without power, the utility reported on its website, noting that electricity was likely to be restored by noon.

The California Highway Patrol closed portions of the freeway due to the downed pole for about an hour.
