Bonita, Calif.- A 45-year-old man suspected of wounding two people at a condominium complex near Sweetwater County Park in Bonita was found dead at the end of a five-and-a-half-hour standoff from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
The gunfire at the condominium complex in the 2900 block of Briarwood Road was reported shortly before 5 p.m. Friday, according to San Diego County Sheriff’s Department officials.
When deputies arrived, they found a man, suffering from a gunshot wound, in the driveway of the complex and saw another man, armed with a rifle, running toward the condominiums, officials said.
Deputies surrounded the area and evacuated four units immediately surrounding the one where the suspect was believed to have barricaded himself and instructed other residents to shelter in place, according to the sheriff’s department.
A woman, also suffering from a gunshot wound, was found inside one of the four evacuated units and paramedics took both victims to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
A sheriff’s SWAT team was summoned and around 10:30 p.m., a robot sent into the condominium where the suspect was believed to have holed up captured images of the man, inside the living room, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Members of the SWAT team entered the unit and confirmed the suspect was dead. A rifle was found next to the his body, according to the sheriff’s department.
