coronadoBridgeSAN DIEGO — Authorities closed the westbound lanes of the Coronado Bridge for about half an hour Friday while they convinced an apparently suicidal man not to jump from the span.

The drama began at around 3 p.m. when the man stood at the north edge near the center of the bridge. The California Highway Patrol stopped westbound traffic while negotiators talked with the man. The eastbound lanes remained open.

Authorities convinced the man to come away from the edge of the bridge, and he was taken into custody.

Westbound traffic was moving again by 3:30 p.m., but traffic remained congested on Interstate 5 approaching the bridge.
