ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A North County man was arrested on suspicion of murder Friday after he allegedly beat an acquaintance to death during a drunken fight in a North County home.

escondidoOfficers and medics responding to a report of a medical emergency in the 300 block of West Seventh Avenue in Escondido about 7:30 a.m. found the body of a man in his 40s, according to police.

The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, had suffered extensive blunt-force injuries to his head, Sgt. Shannon Murphy said.

Detectives soon identified an Escondido resident, 43-year-old Martin Vasquez, as the alleged killer and took him into custody. He was booked into county jail in Vista.

The fatality occurred during an “alcohol-fueled event” with witnesses present, Murphy said. She declined to elaborate on the reason for the dispute or say if either the suspect or victim lived at the home where it occurred.
