fatal-crash-grpSAN ONOFRE, Calif. — Two men were killed early Friday when an SUV plowed into a parked big rig alongside Interstate 5 in the far northwestern reaches of San Diego County.

The northbound 1996 Ford Explorer drifted to the right onto a dirt shoulder near the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station for unknown reasons about 2:40 a.m. and crashed into the back of the truck, winding up lodged underneath it, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The SUV’s driver, a 36-year-old Long Beach man, died at the scene of the accident along with his unidentified passenger, CHP public-affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The driver of the commercial vehicle was unharmed, the officer said.

The crash left one lane blocked in the area for about three hours.
