SAN DIEGO — A gunman suspected of killing a man in the Bay Park neighborhood barricaded himself in a home in Clairemont Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The gunfire in the 2200 block of Denver Street was reported shortly after 2:30 p.m., according to San Diego police. The victim was shot in the head in the backyard of a home. He died at the scene, police said.

Witnesses described the shooter as a roughly 6-foot-2-inch man with curly blond hair, and several of them told officers they believed they knew who he was, SDPD spokesman Ed Zwibel said.

The assailant, who was wearing a bright-blue shirt, may have fled to the south in a blue Plymouth van, according to police.

Police surrounded a home about 5 miles from the shooting in the 4600 block of Firestone Street  street. They said they believe the gunman is inside. Investigators said the gunman may be armed with an automatic rifle.
