coast guard missing boaterOCEANSIDE — Crews planned to resume searching later Tuesday morning for a man who failed to return home from a boating outing off the coast of Oceanside.

The man’s dog, which had been with him, was found on the beach near a jetty Monday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. A beachgoer found the dog and reached the missing man’s wife by calling the phone number listed on the canine’s collar, the USCG’s public affairs office said in a statement.

Around 5:30 p.m., the wife called Oceanside harbor police to report her husband was missing, and just after 8 p.m., harbor police called on Coast Guard crews to help search  for him using a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and the Coast Guard cutter Edisto. As of early Tuesday, the search had been suspended until after sunrise, according to Oceanside police.

The Coast Guard reported that the man was last known to be on his 21-foot white fishing boat, named Lucky Dog. How his dog managed to get from the boat to the beach was a mystery.
