traffic-highwayCHULA VISTA, Calif. – Caltrans is warning drivers to steer clear of I-805 in Chula Vista starting Sunday at 3 p.m.

The highway is being shut down in both directions between state Route 905 and state Route 54. It isn’t expected to reopen until around 5 a.m. Monday.

Officials expect drivers who do not avoid the area could be stuck in traffic for around 3 hours. They are recommending drivers use State Route 125 as an alternate. The toll roads will be free of charge during the highway closure.

Caltrans is calling this weekend’s project “Darmageddon.”

“We came up with Darmaggedon because we’re building a direct access ramp, a DAR, to replace the old East Palomar Street Bridge,” a Caltrans spokesman said.

The construction is part of the larger 805-S Express Lanes Project which began in the spring. Phase one includes construction of carpool lanes, the direct access ramp project, and construction of a transit station and Park & Rise at East Palomar Street. Ten sound walls are also being built.

The second phase will further expand the carpool lanes into Express Lanes for a total of four lanes, two in each direction. An HOV direct connector will also be added between I-805 and Interstate 15.
