knife-webCARLSBAD, Calif. — A 38-year-old man was in custody Monday on suspicion of stabbing two people in Carlsbad, police said.

Kevin Rachford was arrested on suspicion of two counts of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the stabbings in the 6400 block of Terraza Portico late Sunday night, Carlsbad police Lt. Pete Pascual said.

Officers were called to 6418 Terraza Portico just after 11 p.m., Pascual said in a statement. Once there, they found a male and a female with stab wounds, and learned from witnesses that the assailant fled on foot, he said.

A perimeter was set up within which Rachford eventually was found and arrested, he said.

Paramedics took both victims to local hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not immediately reported.

The Carlsbad Police Department’s Crimes of Violence Unit was investigating the motive.
