I-8 Freeway Fire

EL CAJON, Calif. — A brush fire broke out along eastbound Interstate 8 in East County Friday, scorching a 50-by-300-foot patch of earth and causing minor damage to a building, according to Heartland Fire & Rescue.

The blaze was reported about 10 a.m. west of Main Street, and firefighters had the flames knocked down in about 20 minutes, a Heartland dispatcher said.

A building in the 500 block of Front Street was damaged, according to Heartland, which dispatches for various East County fire departments. No injuries were reported.

The California Highway Patrol closed two lanes of the freeway to allow firefighters access to the fire.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
