SAN DIEGO — A report to the City Council’s Infrastructure Committee Monday recommended the development of plan to pay for deferred infrastructure work.

Putting off maintenance and renovation projects because of budget restraints in recent years has left the city with backlog of projects that will cost a minimum of $900 million, according to Erin Noel of the city’s Independent Budget Analyst’s office.

“Infrastructure issues impact the public health, safety and quality of life for San Diego communities, as well as the tourism industry, which is an important part of the city’s economy,” Noel said. “Addressing infrastructure issues is clearly one of the highest priorities for the city.”

With the economy improving, Noel said city officials have begun to address the problem, but a citywide, multi-year capital improvement plan is needed.

“The backbone of the city has been neglected for too long, and now we have a hefty tab to pay,” said City Councilman Mark Kersey, who heads the committee.

In January, the committee passed a tentative work plan calling for a thorough infrastructure needs assessment.

Another unwanted gift from Jerry $anders , who swept issues under the carpet in order to make it appear he was actually improving the budget problems, when in fact he simply deferred dealing with them, knowing it would raise costs to taxpayers exponentially and resurface under someone else's watch. Now it is time to pay the piper, while $anders & his cronies sit home collecting fat retirement checks.

Here is a clip of a 2008 council meeting where city workers warned that this was happening.

Thanks Jerry, the potholes have been a real treat, now come the tax bills for all the other costs you decided to defer, rather than address in a sensible fashion!

You can't blame all of it on Jerry. The "City Leaders" have been putting off basic infrastructure repairs for many, many years – several Mayors worth. It's the way this city operates.
