SAN DIEGO — A surfer whose body was discovered with apparent shark bites had committed suicide before the attack occurred, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner.

Pacific Beach Brandon Beaver, 42, died while on a surfing outing off Pacific Beach. His naked body was discovered floating offshore early May 9. His wetsuit had been wrapped around the surfboard.

The determination by the medical examiner that Beaver committed suicide came after an autopsy and interviews with friends and family members. Details were not revealed. The manner of death was listed as drowning by suicide.

The bite marks came from a “post-mortem” attack, the medical examiner concluded.

A woman had reported to authorities at 7:35 p.m. May 8 that her fiance was missing after a surfing outing. Lifeguards and the U.S. Coast Guard searched for several hours with boats and helicopters.

The body initially was spotted by a beachgoer about 3:30 a.m. May 9.
