Name for Zoo’s baby koala put to a vote

web-koalaSAN DIEGO — Online voting for the name of a female koala joey born at the San Diego Zoo last summer is scheduled to begin Friday.

Choices include:
– Kirra, which means leaf;
– Bri, meaning acacia;
– Arika, which means water lily; or
– Tallara, meaning rain.

The joey, which has been more independent of her mother lately, was born July 15 last year. It can be seen on the zoo’s Koala Cam.

Koala animal care staff members selected the final names, which are Aboriginal in origin.

Online voting at will continue through May 10. The koalas will be on display at the zoo’s new Australian Outback exhibit, which is scheduled to open May 24.
